Notes From The Room · 3 min

The most expensive word in your pitch is “confident”

Confidence asserted is confidence doubted. Show the evidence and let them arrive at it.

Doubt leaks out through small words and founders almost never hear themselves do it. We think we can get there. We are hoping to reach. We should be able to. Each little hedge, think, hoping, should, try, is a tiny crack and across a whole pitch they add up to an impression the founder never intended, that even they are not quite sure this will work. The idea might be strong. The words quietly undercut it.

Investors listen for this more closely than founders realise, because language is a window into belief. A founder who says we will reach profitability by Q3 is making a commitment. One who says we are hoping to maybe get close to profitability around Q3 is making an excuse in advance. Same plan, possibly. Completely different level of conviction and conviction is a large part of what is being bought.

✕Hedged, by accident

“We think we can maybe try to get there, hopefully.” Four hedges in one sentence and the belief drained out.

✓Plain and committed

“We will get there. Here is the plan and here is what we are still solving.” Certain where you can be, honest where you cannot.

Say will, not hope

The fix is not to overclaim, it is to stop draining your own sentences. Replace hope with will where you actually mean it. Cut the reflexive maybe, the just, the try to. We will launch in three markets, not we are hoping to try to launch in a few markets. The second is not more honest, it is just more frightened and the fear is doing nothing but weakening a claim you could have made cleanly.

Belief drains with every hedge

"Maybe"

"Try to"

"Hopefully"
Each small word takes a little more conviction out of the same claim. Illustrative numbers.
The gap between “we hope to” and “we will” is the gap between a founder who believes and one bracing to be disappointed.

Keep honesty where it belongs

None of this means bulldozing every sentence into false certainty. The skill is knowing where confidence belongs and where honesty does. Be plain and committed about the things you have decided and can control, the plan, the next milestone, what you will build. Be honest, openly, about the genuine unknowns. What you must not do is smear a nervous maybe across everything, including the things you actually believe, because that is where a strong pitch quietly bleeds out.

Small words, big cost

So listen to yourself or better, record a rehearsal and count the hedges. You will be surprised how many think and hope and try slipped in while you were not paying attention. Cut them from the claims you can stand behind. What is left will sound like what it is, a founder who believes the thing they are asking someone else to believe.
