The clearest way to explain what your company does is not to describe the product. It is to show two pictures, the world with the problem and the world after you have solved it, side by side and let the gap between them do the talking. Founders instinctively reach for features, we do this, we do that and features are the least memorable way to explain anything. A before and after is the most.
The reason is how people actually understand new things, by contrast. Tell someone your product has real time reconciliation and their eyes glaze, it is an abstraction floating in space. Show them the before, a shopkeeper at midnight tallying six apps by hand and the after, the same shopkeeper closing the day in one tap and they get it instantly and they feel it, which matters even more than getting it.
The gap is your value, made visible
What sits between those two pictures is your value proposition, except now it is concrete instead of abstract. You are not claiming to save time, you are showing three hours a night handed back. You are not claiming to reduce errors, you are showing the pile of mistakes that simply stops happening. The before and after turns a feature list into a felt difference and felt differences are what people remember and repeat.
The gap, made visible
It works on the vision slide too
This is not only a product trick, it scales all the way up to the vision. The most compelling vision slides are a before and after of the whole market or even the world. Here is how this industry works today, clumsy, expensive, unfair. Here is how it works once we have won. When an investor can see that gap clearly, your company stops being a product and becomes the bridge between the two and bridges to obviously better worlds are exactly what investors want to fund.
Building a before and after
- 1Paint the before
One person, one moment, the problem as lived.
- 2Paint the after
The same person, the problem gone.
- 3Point at the gap
That difference is your value.
- 4Let them say it back
If they can repeat it, it worked.
So before you build another feature slide, try this. Draw the before, honestly and vividly. Draw the after. Put them next to each other and say almost nothing. The distance between the two pictures will explain your company faster and stick harder, than any list of things it does.
