The founder origin story that actually matters

Not where you went to school. The moment you collided with this problem and couldn’t let it go.

Somewhere in most meetings an investor asks a version of the same soft question, so why did you start this. And most founders answer it as if it were trivia, a quick factual origin, we saw a gap in the market and move briskly on. They treat it as small talk to get through. It is not small talk. It is one of the most important questions in the room and the fact that it sounds casual is exactly what makes it revealing.

Here is what the investor is actually probing. They are about to back you through years of difficulty and they want to know whether your reason for doing this is deep enough to survive them. A founder who started a company because the space looked hot will quit when it stops being hot. A founder who started because they lived the problem, because it genuinely matters to them, tends to still be standing when the market turns cold and investors have learned to tell the difference.

The market can explain what you built. Only your reason for building it explains why you will not quit.

The real why is usually personal

The strongest origin stories are almost always personal and specific. You watched this problem hurt someone you knew. You hit it yourself, over and over, in a previous job, until you could not stop thinking about it. You come from the world this problem lives in and you have wanted to fix it for years. That kind of reason cannot be faked and does not fade and an investor can hear the difference between it and a reason invented for the pitch in about two sentences.

Which reasons last

How personal the reason →Likely to stay when it gets hard →The space looked hotSaw a gap in the marketHit the problem in a past jobComes from the world of the problem
The more personal the reason, the more likely the founder is still standing when the market turns. Illustrative numbers.

Do not perform it, just tell it

This does not mean manufacturing a tear jerker. Investors have a fine ear for a story engineered to move them and a performed origin does more harm than none at all. The move is simply to tell the true one, plainly. If your real reason is that you spent five years watching this break and could not let it go, say that, in your own flat words. Honesty carries further than drama here, because they are not judging the story, they are judging whether the person telling it will endure.

Trivia or the real why

✕ The trivia answer
  • "We saw a gap in the market"
  • Said briskly
  • Moves straight on
→
✓ The real why
  • Personal and specific
  • Hard to fake
  • Explains why you will not quit
The question sounds casual. That is what makes the answer revealing.

So take the question seriously when it comes and do not rush it. The origin story is where an investor stops evaluating your company for a moment and starts evaluating you, why you are really here and whether that reason will hold when it gets hard. Give them the true answer, told simply. It may be the most persuasive thing you say all meeting.
